Tough Love - Couples Edition!
So, who out there has been watching Tough Love Couples? When I first saw the promo for this show all I could think is, “wow, they really put these couples through the wringer to make for some dramatic tv!”. Not cool. However, then I started watching the show, and though some of the “challenges” they put the couples through can be cartoonish and over-the-top, for the most part the show has a good message for taking care of a relationship. Steve Ward, the deliverer of the Tough Love, essentially coaches the couples to take responsibility for themselves, to address issues in their lives they have been avoiding, and to communicate honestly with their partners about their feelings, concerns, and insecurities. He is also coaching the couples how to be honest about whether or not their relationship is a good match, and how to know when it is time to move on. Good stuff. These are the same kinds of things I work on with couples in couples therapy (only I don’t yell at the couples I see!) and it’s nice to see a show deal with these issues in a relatively positive way.
